Hearing is defined as “the process, function or power of perceiving a sound.”
Listening is defined as “to hear something with thoughtful attention.”
I had a moment last week where knowing God listens to me hit me HARD! Of course, I know that He hears my prayers, but there is something about seeing Him answer immediately that makes a big impact. The difference is knowing God LISTENS to me. Work was hard because I’m in a state of transition that is causing me a little bit of discomfort. I wasn’t even praying to God at the time, but I happened to say something out loud. The next morning, God showed me that He heard and listened to my cry, even when I wasn’t praying to Him.
We all have experienced someone hearing us, but not listening to what we are saying. Listening is a special skill, and without proper training, we only listen with 25% accuracy. Listening requires one to be attentive and empathetic to their audience. Listening is hard! We are easily distracted. Then there is God. He is all knowing, present everywhere, and not only hearing, but LISTENING to every one of us. That alone is powerful.
What you say in the atmosphere matters! Even when you think you aren’t in direct conversation with God, He listens to the words that come out of your mouth! When we take this into account, we should be more mindful of what we say. We want to positively speak into the atmosphere. Even when we can’t, in moments of frustration or sadness, God still hears that declaration and will answer because He is listening to your heart. I am so grateful that what I said was speaking positively into my atmosphere of change.
Today, my moment of encouragement is to tell you that God hears you and is listening to you. He hears those moments of frustration. He hears your heart. He hears what you can’t say. God hears you even when you aren’t speaking to Him. Not only is He hearing you, but He is listening. He understands what you are going through. He is giving you thoughtful attention. Why? Because He wants to address the issues of your heart. He wants to answer your prayers according to HIS will. He wants what’s best for you. He wants to talk with you. God showed me that even though I left Him out the loop, He was still going to work on my behalf. He was still speaking to others about me in ways that would benefit my future because He was listening to me! Just imagine what would happen if we TOOK IT TO THE LORD IN PRAYER every single time! Sometimes we need these small moments for God to remind us that He is there listening to our prayers.
So even in our outcries of frustration or just speaking in our own space, remember your words declare something. Your words are powerful. We know Proverbs 18:21. Remember to speak well of yourself. Remember to speak well of your atmosphere. Remember to speak well of the Lord.
Yes, God hears YOU and He is LISTENING!
